Can't Reply to Google Reviews? Causes and Fixes

Can't reply to Google reviews? Fix a missing Reply button, wrong account or role, unverified or suspended profile, and replies that haven't appeared yet.

Can't reply to Google reviews: check account access and verification, or whether a submitted reply is awaiting review.

You want to reply to a Google review, but there's no Reply button. Or you've already answered and your reply still isn't public. These are different problems, and the quickest fix depends on which one you have.

Quick answer: To reply, the Business Profile must be verified and you must be signed in to a Google Account that's an owner or manager of it. Open the profile, select Read reviews, then Reply. If the button is missing, check your account, role and verification. If you've already replied, Google may still be reviewing it.

A missing Reply button requires account, access and verification checks; an unpublished reply requires review-time and edit-request checks.

1. Check where you're replying from

In your Business Profile, select Read reviews, then Reply next to the review, write your answer and select Reply again, as set out in Google's instructions for managing reviews. On Google Maps on a computer, open your Business Profile, scroll to Reviews and click Reply.

That's the management view for owners and managers. If you've searched for your business while signed in to an account without access, you'll see the reviews as a customer does, with no way to answer them. If you have several locations, make sure you've opened the right one.

2. The profile has to be verified

Google is clear: "Before you can reply to reviews, you must verify your business. After your business is verified, you can reply to reviews on your Business Profile."

A verification that's still in progress doesn't count. Finish it, and the reply option should follow. The methods vary by business, so follow the one Google offers you in its verification guide rather than an old tutorial.

3. You need to be signed in to the right Google Account

It's easy to be signed in to a personal or old company account by mistake. Google's verification help says: "To find your profile, you must sign in to the Google Account associated with it." Check the avatar in the top corner and switch accounts if you need to.

If more than one person handles reviews, each needs their own login: "To access and manage Business Profiles without the need to share your password, each user needs their own Google Account." Don't send anyone the owner's password just because their Reply button is missing.

Check the correct Google Account, owner or manager access, and a verified Business Profile before replying.

4. Owners and managers can both reply

Google says additional owners and managers "can edit info, respond to reviews and manage posts". Managers "have mostly the same access to the profile as owners. The only exception is that they can't add or remove users or remove the profile." Responding to reviews appears in Google's owners and managers table for both roles, so you don't need Primary Owner access to answer a customer.

The seven-day myth. New owners and managers do face a short wait, but not for replies. Google says "you have to wait seven days before you can manage some profile features", and the features it lists are deleting or undeleting a profile, removing other owners or managers, and transferring primary ownership. Replying isn't one of them.

5. You may not have been added yet

If you're not an owner or manager, the reply option won't be there for you. An existing owner goes to the Business Profile, selects More → Business Profile settings → People and access, selects Add, enters your email, chooses Owner or Manager and selects Invite. Then you accept: "Invited users can accept the invite and become users right away." Owners can see "all current users and pending invites in the 'People and access' page."

Need to ask for access? Copy this:

Could you invite my Google Account as a Manager on our Business Profile? It's under Business Profile settings → People and access. I only need to reply to reviews, not Primary Owner access, and I'll accept the invite from my own account.

Both owners and managers can reply to Google reviews using their own invited Google Accounts.

6. A suspended or removed profile has to be fixed first

If Google removes a Business Profile, its owner and managers cannot act on it. If the profile is suspended or disabled, follow Google's appeal and reinstatement instructions. A removed profile may require a separate reinstatement request, and an account-level restriction can also affect access. Check the exact status in your account before taking action. Don't create a duplicate listing to bypass a restriction; doing so won't restore review access.

7. Google checks replies before they appear

If you've replied and it isn't showing, it may still be under review. Google says: "If your reply isn't approved to be posted, you'll be asked to edit it. Replies usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes a review can take up to 30 days." Replies have to follow Google's content policies, so if you're asked to edit, remove anything that might break them and resubmit. Don't post duplicates while you wait.

Once approved, the reply is "publicly posted under the customer's review. It will appear like your business replied, and your personal name won't be shown." And "the person who wrote the review is notified when you reply."

If it's the customer's review that has vanished, that's a different problem. See why Google reviews disappear.

When the person who replied has left

Removing a former manager doesn't wipe their work: "their replies to reviews, posts, comments and other actions stay on the Business Profile." If you're training new staff, our day-one Google reviews checklist helps set out who replies and when to escalate.

Some businesses can't have reviews at all

"Reviews are available only in certain countries or regions and for certain business categories." If your profile has no reviews and no review options at all, this may be why.

Your quick checklist

Seven checks for troubleshooting problems replying to Google reviews.
  1. Reply from your managed Business Profile, not a personal search.
  2. Check the profile is verified.
  3. Sign in to the account that's an owner or manager.
  4. Not on the profile? Ask an owner to invite you, then accept.
  5. Ignore the seven-day myth. It doesn't apply to replies.
  6. If the profile is suspended or removed, sort that out first.
  7. Already replied? Allow Google's review time and edit if asked.

Once replying works, see our guides to responding to positive reviews and responding to negative reviews for wording.

One thing to know about your website: GR Widget doesn't show owner replies. Your reply does its work on Google, under the review, where the customer and everyone reading your profile will see it.
